How to setup Database Mail to work with IIS SMTP Server in Windows XP

You have to achieve two objectives:

    1. Configure your IIS SMTP Server.
    2. Configure Database Mail.

For the first objective, it is essential to configure your SMTP server to relay messages. How, can you do that? Read here: XCON: How to Configure the IIS SMTP Service to Relay SMTP Mail.

For the second part just use the Database Mail Configuration Wizard  from SQL Server Management Studio.

To give you an example, here's my configuration:

    Objective 1

    • In the IIS (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools), Default SMTP Virtual Server node, I added a new domain sqlserver.ro.
    • Right-click on Default SMTP Virtual Server node and select Properties.
    • On the Access tab, click the Relay... button.
    • Click Add and I selected the Single Computer option and I entered my IP adress 89.37.xx.xx.
    • Click Ok and close the IIS.

    Objective 2

    • Using the Database Mail Configuration Wizard I created a new profile named MICROTRAINING and I configured an email address - sql@microtraining.ro.

That's all! The best part is that I did the above steps in 5 minutes and even better it works!
