The data access strategy is changing and you don't know where to start. I gathered some starting resource that you may use for that: Whitepapers and blog posts The ADO.NET Entity

re: Next-Generation Data Access

Even inside Microsoft there are disputes if EDM is or isn't neccessary.

In my opinion, at the end of the day - there would be a relational database :)

There are people that think otherwise. For example, Daniela Florescu (that had a great contribution to XQuery): "

My Outrageous Claim:

In 15-20 years from now: lnformation will stay only in XML (no more tuples, no more objects)

Imperative languages as we know them today (Java, C, C++, C#) will be gone

We will program with some extension of XQuery, or in any case a declarative dataflow/workflow language specially designed for XML processing, SOA, and for enabling universal information flow.

The sooner we go there the better."
